One in eighteen people in the United States will develop Colorectal Cancer this year. Colon Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. In 2010 142,500 will develop Colorectal Cancer and 51,370 will die from this very preventable disease. I would like to encourage all of you to take some time out of your busy schedules for a screening examination to check for early signs of this cancer.
Early detection can save your life.
Treatment of colon cancer in its earliest stages is remarkably successful, BUT, if the disease is left unchecked the chance of survival drops precipitously. I pray you will take this awareness message seriously and tell your family and friends, too. Colon cancer is one disease where a little prevention and early screening definitely saves lives.
In 2001 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer and after surgery and 6 months chemotherapy I have become one of the lucky few to survive this deadly, yet very preventable disease. |

In looking for a way to make more people aware and to raise money for the cancer centers that specialize in research and treatment I fell back on my love of big game fishing and started the Florida Fish for Life billfish tournament. In 2003 we where incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit. With the support of some very dear friends who have shared my desire to give back to their communities the event has grown significantly. We continue to run it with an all volunteer staff to minimize costs and maximize our donations. Over the first seven years Florida Fish for Life has generated almost $300,000 for cancer centers in both Palm Beach and Philadelphia areas. Past donations have gone to the Southeastern Cancer Research Center of Palm Beach, the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, the Cleveland Clinic of Weston Florida, the Jupiter Medical Cancer Center and the Sari Asher Center. We are proud to assure you that your donations go directly to support these fine institutions and the important work they are doing to isolate the causes, find a cure and treat those like me who are afflicted with colon cancer. Whether you live in these areas or not the research being done at these institutions have an affect all over the world. So please donate help them cure these Cancers. |

Florida Fish for Life 125 Ebbtide Drive North Palm Beach, FL 33408-5018 Dear Mr. Miller,
Thank you for your ongoing and generous support of Penn's Abramson Cancer Center. We are continually grateful for your dedication to raising awareness of colon cancer and its prevention for our patients and cancer patients around the world. As you host the eighth annual "Florida Fish for Life" event, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the impact of this event on our colon cancer research and patient education services at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Donations received from the Florida Fish for Life event have been used to support an international visiting scholars program, our weekly multidisciplinary gastrointestinal cancer clinic/conference, and the annual GI Patient Education conference. Each area contributes to our multidisciplinary approach to fighting colon cancer. Mission: Donations from the Florida Fish for Life tournament support our mission of creating new knowledge through leading edge research and providing hope to those whose lives have been touched by cancer, through patient care excellence in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Like every patient, every gift we receive is special and important. The Colon Cancer Research and Patient Care Fund provides Penn's Abramson Cancer Center - one of the premier cancer institutions in the country - with the necessary resources to conduct interdisciplinary colon cancer research and provide patient education for patients and their families from the Greater Philadelphia region and beyond. Funding from the proceeds of the Florida Fish for Life events has been distributed among three main areas of focus: • Cancer education and prevention are global issues including GI cancers, and the University of Pennsylvania is playing a leading role in this area. The majority of expended funds have gone to sponsor an international oncology exchange program under the direction of Weijing Sun, M.D. Dr. Sun, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the Director of Upper GI and Pancreatic-¬biliary-hepatic Cancer Group and the Associate Director of the GI Cancer Program, is an expert in gastrointestinal cancers. His area of global health interest is China and Asia, and he has used his contacts with Beijing University Medical Center, Fudan University, and Namtong Medical College in China to attract four GI oncologists to the Abramson Cancer Center. The objective of the program is to improve the research and treatment skills of these international oncologists, but also to focus on the treatment and development of new drugs for gastrointestinal cancers. ~ The treatment of GI cancers is a multidisciplinary task. The Colon Cancer Research and Patient Care Fund is being used for the weekly multidisciplinary GI cancer clinic. The clinic is maned by our Patient and Family Services staff to increase the team approach to treating cancer for each individual patient. • The Abramson Cancer Center hosts a series of disease-specific patient and family educational conferences and has been acknowledged by the NCI (National Cancer Institute) for its outstanding educational programs. The conferences empower our patients and their care providers with the latest information on treatment advances. The day-long conferences enable attendees to participate in sessions ranging from translational research breakthroughs and managing information on the web to health insurance assistance, nutritional counseling and survivorship issues. The Colon Cancer Research and Patient Care Fund is used to support the annual GI Patient Education conference. The conference is aimed at educating individuals at risk for colon, pancreas, and liver cancers and providing updated research for those patients living with a gastrointestinal cancer. The Colon Cancer Research and Patient Care Fund has made a tangible difference to our patients and our ongoing research activities, and we look forward to many more years of partnership to fight this disease.
With Warm Regards, Craig Thompson, M.D. Director, Abramson Cancer Center
