Experienced anglers that have been trained by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) to become official IGFA certified observers aboard tournament boats. The observer is knowledgeable with both the IGFA and the tournament rules. This benefits tournaments and anglers by eliminating or reducing rule disputes that sometimes arise. Certified observers can often prevent inadvertent rule infractions before they occur.
Observers often travel many miles to observe in tournaments at their own expense, which they receive no compensation other than the great feeling they get to see these billfish released for another day.
